No matter what the nature of the legal issue is, the court must have personal jurisdiction over the parties in order to make decisions affecting those parties. Before a Texas court can exercise power over a party, the United States Constitution requires that the party have “minimum contacts” with the State of Texas.

Personal jurisdiction disputes may arise when an out-of-state person or entity is sued in Texas and that party does not believe it has the requisite “minimum contacts” with the State of Texas such that it is forced to come to Texas to defend itself.
